Dr. Katherine Ramsdell of Duke Psychology came and spoke with us about Behaviors in Epilepsy Children. Below are her notes.
Marissa Nelson (12) with Dr. Dmitry T. If you missed January's Meeting, we have extra copies of the slideshow sheets he gave. Thank you Dr. Dmitry for taking the time to come speak to our group!
Its been a while since we have blogged. Our group is going thru leadership changes. Erin has decided to "hand the reins over" to three (Heather, Shellie and Me-Jill) of us to run the TEASG. We will miss her!!! She has done so much for the Support Group of the past 6-7 years. We are amazed at her skills, time commitment and service she has rendered since this group has started. We love your Erin!!!
As we go thru new leadership, please be patient. We would love your input and hope to apply your input to our group. We have now decided to do Big events every Winter and Summer for now. We are still having our normal monthly meetings with Doctors, Specialist, School Resources and other personnel. Now onto a recent Event!
Thank you to all that joined us at Shellie and Phil Gruber's home this afternoon!!! The kids and parents enjoyed each other company. Even when Jill's twins tried to try out Phil's Elliptical and that didn't go so well. lol!
Wow! I can't believe it is already 2018, and that January has come and gone!! Our group has had some fun months since I last updated. We are super excited for what this year has to hold!!
Our group will be 5 years old in July!!! Our first meeting had a few parents and connections were made instantly. Connecting families who are going through this life of caring for a child with epilepsy is so important. There really aren't words that can describe how hard this journey can be for families and our Epilepsy warriors. And how isolating it can be.
But, it can also be so much fun and amazing memories can still be made, even in the darkest of times. And that is what this group has taught me, and I hope for others as well. I have learned how to "live in the moment" more and not be afraid to step out of my comfort zone. And that we're never alone.
Here's to a fresh new year of memories and connections!!
PS- here are some pictures of some fun we had in the Fall. Had a blast at a hockey game thanks to The Carolina Hurricanes special events staff giving our group 75 tickets!! Also, some pictures from our meetings and a highlight for the kids was making slime.... thank you Kristen K for all that you do for our kids!! We also had a bowling outing last weekend :)
Our FROZEN YOGURT FUNDRAISER was a HUGE success!!! Thanks for all that came out on Saturday night for our Orange Leaf Fundraiser. And a BIG thank you to Orange Leaf for your generosity to our cause!! We were able to raise $300 to help the Epilepsy Foundation of NC's medication fund. Every dollar is so appreciated!!!
We will also continue to have our Lewis Art Fundraiser going on. Please check out our "Upcoming Events" page for more details. There are amazing paintings, and 30% of all proceeds will go to the Epilepsy Foundation of NC.
Hope you are all having a great summer and staying cool!!! Here is a picture from our fun night out!!
June has been a great month!!!!!
Earlier this month we had our Durham Bulls outing!! Fun was had by all. This is always a great event and fun for our families to kick back and enjoy a ball game together.
Our June Support Group meeting last night was a success. Dr. Mikati from Duke Hospital was our guest speaker and talked to us about advances in epilepsy treatments. Lots of great information and always a pleasure to have him speak to our group!! Thank you Dr. M for a great night!!
We are sad to say, that The White Family will be moving to Virginia (check out Charlie and his mom with Dr. M in the pictures!). The good news is that they will be close enough to come to future meetings and still visit!!!
And we want to send a HUGE thank you to Jennifer Downie and her sweet kids for their dedication to our childcare needs over the years. Jennifer saw the need for our group and volunteered to start the childcare option for our families a few years back. They will be moving on in the Fall to other opportunities but will stay in touch!!
Check out the pictures below of our fun month!! Our next official meeting will be in September. We will have various activities over the summer. Stay tuned.....
We had a great support group meeting this month!! Dr. Gallentine from Duke Hospital was our guest speaker and our parents learned quite a bit!! We had a great turnout and almost ran out of chairs.... a good problem to have!!! Thanks so much to Dr. Gallentine for coming out to speak to us!!
We are looking forward to having Dr. Mikati from Duke Hospital come out for our next meeting on Tuesday, June 20th! This will be our last meeting for the 2016-2017 year. We will have activities over the summer for our families and our next official meeting will be in September.
Here's to a great summer ahead!!! :)
Our April Meeting was another great night. We had some new families come out and we talked about struggles and challenges with care giving. And we were able to share our stories with one another. And have some laughs!
Over on the kids side.... they were celebrating one of our amazing warriors birthday!! Charlie had his 14th birthday with pizza and cupcakes and lots of laughs with his friends. Our group truly is a family!
Happy Birthday to Charlie!!!
Sadly, we had to say good-bye to one of our amazing families that have truly become family to us. The McNeill Family will be heading to Alabama for a great opportunity for them. We will miss you all so much, but will of course we'll stay in touch!!!! Best of luck to you!!!!!
We will have Dr. Gallentine speak to our group next month!! We are really excited!!
If you know of anyone in the area that might be interested in helping with our childcare team, please contact Erin at: firstname.lastname@example.org. You will have so much fun! Our kids are awesome! :)

We were unable to hold our March meeting at our usual place due to some issues with the facility. But, as our families know very well.... there can always be a "Plan B"!!

We have some great events coming up in April.... check out our "Upcoming Events" page for details!!! And we have a great speaker coming out for our April meeting as well. You won't want to miss it!!

My name is Jill Nelson. I have 5 children ages 6-12 years old. We joined this group in 2014 because two of our girls have Epilepsy and this group has been a second family to us. We hope as you read our blog you will be inspired to seek out others and help with Epilepsy awareness.
